The exchange of thoughtful ideas and opinions is the catalyst of human development. Personal growth depends not only on our life experiences but also on the expansion of our intellectual boundaries. Opinions and Ideas is a blog in which I share my reflections on politics, immigration, and economic, social and political inequality. I acknowledge this blog is a drop in the vast ocean of information we navigate every day. Nevertheless, I hope people are willing to engage with the issues presented here.

Venezuela is where I came into the world. It is the place that nurtured me during the first two and a half decades of my life. Thus, Venezuela is a recurring topic of this blog. After earning a technical degree in advertising, I had the opportunity to visit the U.S. A sojourn that was intended to last a few months became a permanent stay.

Writing has been an activity I have done intermittently for many years. Expressing my thoughts in written form helps give shape to the ideas that float in my mind like amorphous plumes of smoke. But until now, this had been a private activity.

A couple of events lead to my decision of making public the multitude of thoughts that occupy a large portion of my waking hours. First, the worsening of the economic, social, political and humanitarian situation in Venezuela and the reluctance of the government to change course. Second, the bitter and divisive presidential campaign of 2016 and the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States. Lastly, I recently completed a M.A. in history. The study of history provided a framework to understand previous events and how they affected people’s lives. The usefulness of this framework is not limited to the past. It also serves to comprehend present developments, large and small, regional and global.

I do not claim to have the last word or the definitive answer. I only offer my thoughts, analysis and possible scenarios on the events that find a way to affect each one of us as we try to plow through our daily lives. I invite you to browse, read and comment. El intercambio de ideas y opiniones racionales es el catalizador del desarrollo humano. Opinions and Ideas es un blog en el que comparto mis reflexiones sobre política, inmigración y la inequidad económica, social y política. Reconozco que este blog es una gota en el vasto océano de información que navegamos cada día. Sin embargo, espero que estén dispuestos a tratar los temas que aquí presento.

Venezuela es donde vine al mundo. Es la tierra que nutrió las primeras dos décadas y media de mi vida. Por consiguiente, Venezuela es un tópico recurrente en este blog. Después de obtener un título de técnico superior en publicidad, tuve la oportunidad de viajar a los Estados Unidos. La visita—que originalmente iba a ser de unos meses—se convirtió en una estadía permanente.

La escritura es una actividad que he realizado de manera intermitente por varios años. Expresar mis pensamientos de manera escrita ayuda a dar forma a las ideas que flotan en mi mente como amorfas columnas de humo. Pero hasta ahora, esta había sido una actividad privada.

Varios sucesos me llevaron a tomar la decisión de hacer públicos la multitud de pensamientos que ocupan gran parte de mis horas. Primero, el empeoramiento de la situación económica, social, política y humanitaria en Venezuela y la renuencia del gobierno a cambiar el curso. Segundo, la amarga y divisiva campaña electoral del 2016 y la elección de Donald Trump como presidente de los EE. UU. Por último, recientemente terminé una maestría en historia. El estudio de la historia ofrece un sistema para entender los eventos del pasado y como éstos afectaron a las personas. La utilidad de este sistema no está limitada al pasado. También nos permite comprender los desarrollos actuales, grandes y pequeños, regionales y globales.

No pretendo tener la última palabra o la respuesta definitiva. Solo ofrezco mis pensamientos, análisis y los posibles resultados de eventos que encuentran la manera de afectarnos mientras tratamos de labrar nuestro día a día.
